Smart Mate 1990 – 2020

Smart Mate, the 1990 Smart Little Lena stallion owned by Pat Fitzgerald, Paoli, Okla., was euthanized on October 14, 2020, due to infirmities of old age. Through September 2020, Smart Mate had sired 396 NCHA money earners of $8,027,441.

Bred by Sandra Sims, Fullerton, Calif., and owned as a colt by Grant Finley, Theodosia, Mo., Smart Mate, was out of the Freckles Playboy daughter Freckles Playmate. Fitzgerald acquired Smart Mate in September 1996, won the Southern Futurity 5/6 Open Classic with him that year, and placed as an Open finalist in the Abilene Western and El Cid Futurity, as well. Shown at five by Dean Smith and also at six by Kobie Wood, Smart Mate was retired with NCHA lifetime earnings of $47,265.

Fitzgerald had also stood Doc Quixote and Doc’s Hickory, two of that era’s leading sires, and it was foals out of daughters of those two stallions who would produce many of Smart Mate’s leading money earners. Nutn Buta Houndog, from Smart Mate’s second full crop (1999), and also his top money earner, with $261,583, was out of the Doc Quixote daughter Liza Quixote. From twelve earners of $100,000 or more, four of Smart Mate’s leading money earners were out of Doc Quixote daughters; three were Doc’s Hickory daughters; and one was a Doc’s Hickory granddaughter.

Smart Mate’s first NCHA Futurity finalist, Belle Mate, came from his first full crop (foals of 1998), and was out of Santa Belle, by Doc’s Hickory. Mates Irish Rose, the earner of $156,124, and a 2000 Smart Mate daughter out of Hickory Badger Ina, by Doc’s Hickory, became a noted producer of seven NCHA earners of $596,357, including Arosesuchaclatter LTE $323,079. Arosesuchaclatter, in turn, has become one of many outstanding producers who carry on Smart Mate’s legacy.
