Youth Captures Western Title

Youth from fourteen states and Canada converged on Ogden, Utah for the 1999 Chevy Trucks Western National Championships. The event sponsored by the National Cutting Horse Association was held at the Golden Spike Arena in Ogden.

Mandy Williams from Grantsville, Utah took the Senior Youth Champion honors with a score of 224. The daughter of Steve and Shelly Williams, Mandy has been cutting for eight years. She said her favorite horse is the one she rode in this competition, Docs Smokin’ Bandit. She is a member of the Utah Cutting Horse Association and is a Youth Director for the National Cutting Horse Association.

As Champion Mandy received a NCHA trophy, a Gist buckle, a Cowboy Tack blanket, a Stetson hat gift certificate, Professional Choice products, and a Chevy Jacket. She also received a special $500 youth scholarship sponsored by Bobby Pidgeon and the Bar H Ranch, home of CD Olena and Dual Pep.

Taking Reserve Champion honors with a score of 220 was Jessica Vieth from Missoula, Montana. Jessica is the daughter of Jerry and Jan Vieth. She is currently attending the University of Montana and majoring in Journalism. Vieth has been cutting for 6 years and said her greatest cutting moment so far is being able to get consistent, solid scores on the horse she has been working with for the last two years.

For placing Reserve Champion Jessica received a NCHA trophy, a Gist buckle, a Cowboy Tack blanket, a Stetson hat gift certificate, Professional Choice products, a Chevy Jacket, and the $500 youth scholarship sponsored by Bobby Pidgeon of the Bar H Ranch, home of CD Olena and Dual Pep.

To qualify to compete in the Chevy Trucks Western National Championships, youth members had to rank in the top 10 in their local Area or Affiliate. Qualifying competitors are eligible to compete in the Eastern competition, the Western Competition or both. Winners from the Eastern and Western events will go on to compete in the Chevy Trucks/M.L. Leddy’s National Championships at the NCHA Summer Cutting Spectacular.
