The Color of Money

Fort Worth, Texas (April 16, 2000)- After a heated set of finals, only one horse and rider was able to take home the championship title of the prestigious National Cutting Horse Association Super Stakes Open finals. Dominating the finals with a score of 224, four-year-old cutting horse Jr Colord Prom ridden by top cutting horse trainer Chubby Turner took home the championship title in the second leg of the NCHA/ Great American Insurance Million Dollar Triple Challenge.

After the dust cleared Turner, of Weatherford, Texas, and the American Paint Horse sired by Color Me Smart out of Senorita Summer Prom took home a check for more than $59,000 for owner Nancy Clayton also of Weatherford. The dynamic duo were awarded a Gist buckle, Cowboy Tack blanket, Stetson hat and a handmade pair of M.L. Leddy's custom trophy boots as well.

Additionally, Turner tied for fourth in the same division aboard Jr Colord Haida also a sire of Color Me Smart and by Haidas Boon Becky. The paint stallion is owned by Garry and Janice Foster of Colleyville, Texas.

Taking home the reserve championship with a score of 221.5 was 1999 NCHA World Championship Futurity Open Champion Shania Cee ridden by Shannon Hall of Minco, Oklahoma.. The great mare Shani Cee is sire of Peppys Boy 895 out of Lynx Melody and owned by Billy Cogdell of Tulia, Texas, who received a check for more than $53,000.

The Super Stakes open division is the second leg of the Great American Insurance $1 Million Triple Challenge. Shania Cee was the only horse eligible for the million dollars going into the Super Stakes competition but will not be able to claim the title having lost the event.

In its 20th year, the NCHA Super Stakes for 4-year-olds is one of the premier events on the cutting horse calendar and is open only to foals of nominated stallions. Coupled with the NCHA Super Stakes Classic for five and six-year olds, the event features more than 1,000 cutting horses and riders competing for a total purse exceeding $1.5 million.
