2001 NCHA Select Futurity Sale
154 potential champions nominated to Select Sale Screening
(Fort Worth, TX) The ad reads: "If you don't pick the next Champion, someone else will!" The NCHA Select Futurity Sale has become a Futurity tradition, with proven results. On Saturday, December 15, 75 outstanding two-year-old cutting horses will be sold in the NCHA Select Futurity Sale at W.R. Watt Arena at the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Fort Worth, Texas.
The horses sold in the NCHA Select Futurity Sale must first past the test in the Select Sale Screening process, which will be held November 23-24 at John Justin Arena in the WRMC. A group of five judges will handpick the top 75 horses from a field of 154 nominated this year.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the screening, as it will be a great opportunity to see each horse work. Seeing the top 75 horses work again at the Select Sale on December 15 will give prospective buyers a step up when it comes time to bid on their next NCHA champion.
Many noteworthy two-year-old cutting horses have gone through the NCHA Select Futurity Sale. Horses like Some Kinda Memories, Lynx Melody, Lynx Star Lady, A Hocus Pocus Cat, JR Colord Prom, Royal Blue Boon, Dual Pep, Chick Tari, Bowmans Fancy, Shesa Smarty Lena, Royal Santana, Lenas First Patent, Uno Palomino, That Cool Cat, Nu I Wood, Little De Merritt, Dox Smart Buy, Desire Some Freckles, and Dry Dot have each earned over $100,000 in NCHA cuttings so far. Some Kinda Memories, Lynx Star Lady and Dual Pep have each exceeded the $300,000 mark in NCHA earnings.
Last year's top-selling horse was Playn A Wicked CD, a Quarter Horse mare sired by CD Olena out of Wicked Wanda Gay by Freckles Playboy. The sorrel mare was consigned by Tarin Rice of Spearman, Texas, and purchased by David & Stacie McDavid of Fort Worth, Texas, for $75,000. Playn A Wicked CD is entered in the 2001 NCHA World Championship Futurity Open class this year. The average sale price on 75 head at last year's Select Sale was $21,457.
Of the 154 horses that will go through the screening process in 2001, SR Instant Choice and CD Olena are the leading sires. SR Instant Choice, owned by the SR Instant Choice Partnership, Jacksboro, Texas, has lifetime earnings of $96,850 with 12 offspring nominated to the 2001 NCHA Select Futurity Sale. CD Olena, owned by Bar H Ranche, Weatherford, Texas, has $170,706 lifetime earnings with the NCHA and 11 offspring nominated.
The NCHA Select Futurity Sale is just one of many industry-related activities that take place during the NCHA World Championship Futurity every year. The Select Sale Screening will take place November 23-24 at the John Justin Arena, to be followed on December 15 by the NCHA Futurity Select Sale at the W.R. Watt Arena at 9 a.m.
The 2001 NCHA World Championship Futurity begins November 27 with the first go-round of the Open division at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. The show and its accompanying activities will run for 20 days, culminating on December 16 with the Open Futurity Finals. Non-Pro and Amateur competitors will also make their way through qualifying rounds. In addition to world-class cutting, the NCHA also hosts the Cowboy Christmas Extravaganza trade and gift show, nine cutting horse sales, a Cowboy Santa, and a celebrity cutting.
