Copperish and Cox claim 5/6 Classic Open Championship

Copperish, shown by Lloyd Cox for Jimmie Miller Smith, Geary, Okla., scored 225 points to win Monday’s Abilene Spectacular 5/6 Classic Open championship, while Nothing Elz Matters, shown by Cox for Puryear Farms, Perry Ga., scored 219.5 points for reserve. Two Times Royalty, with 219 points under Ed Flynn for Country Boy Syndicate, Lipan, Tex., placed third in the 14-horse finals.

Copperish and Nothing Elz Matters tied with 223 points under Cox to win last year’s Bonanza Cutting Classic; while Copperish and WRS Royal Tee, also shown by Cox, tied with 221 points for last year’s Abilene Spectacular Classic Open win.

Bred by Double Dove Ranch and sired by Metallic Cat, Copperish $188,329 is out of Stylish Play Lena $264,474, a leading producer of 20 NCHA earners of over $1.8 million, including 2015 NCHA Open Horse of the Year Smooth Talkin Style $293,232.

Nothing Elz Matters $87,993, a Metallic Cat gelding, was bred by Cox out of the Smart Little Lena daughter Little Peppy Jazz, dam of four NCHA earners, including Little Jazzarey $40,523.

In addition to Copperish and Nothing Elz Matters, Cox showed Blackish, owned by Julie Jarma, Weatherford, Tex., to score 214 points and place 12th in the Classic Open Finals. Cox also qualified for the second go-round of the Abilene Spectacular Futurity with eight horses, including Ms Baby Cakes, with 220 points, the second-highest score from the first go-round, and Reycan In The Cash, with 218.5 points, the third-highest score.

Five-year-old Two Times Royalty $12,546 placed in last year’s NCHA Derby Open with Ed Flynn. The One Time Royalty daughter, bred by Gale Force Quarter Horses, is one of 29 NCHA money earners out of Autumn Boon $244,470, a leading producer of earners of over $1.8 million.
