End of the point year
Many weekend cutters around the country ended the 2001
point-year in the saddle as it came to a close Sunday, November 18. Affiliates
in Alabama, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas hosted one-day
shows to wrap up a successful year.
"2001 has been a great year for our weekend shows," noted NCHA Executive Director Jeff Hooper. "It appears that we will be up in the total number of shows produced, added money and total purses for the year, as compared to year 2000. Cutting is experiencing exciting growth across the country, and we are looking forward to a great 2002."
Redwood Empire CHA kicks off 2002 in Santa Rosa, California with shows on December 1 & 2, however, look for most shows for the new point-year to begin after December 25.
Affiliate Spotlight
Area 18 Cutting Horse Association elected its new officers
during their Year End Awards ceremony held in October. Congratulations go out
to new president, Jeff May of Statesboro, Georgia, along with vice president,
Miles Elliott of Estill, South Carolina, and secretary Dan Koontz of Belton,
South Carolina.
On the board of directors are: Ellen Walyus of Johnston, South Carolina; Ben Neely of Lyons, Georgia; Jim Hartley of Monroe, Georgia; Dan Hestad of Jackson, Georgia; Ronnie Ogletree of Watkinsville, Georgia; and Tracy Surles of Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The affiliate generally hosts 6-8 shows each year and plans them in three venues for 2002: Camden, South Carolina; Gainesville, Georgia; and Arden, North Carolina.
Arden, NC was the site of the first small futurity for the Area 18 CHA held on a Friday during May 2001, kicking off a weekend show. The weekend entries totaled 493 with 80 of those entered in the 4- and 5/6- year old event.
The success of that event has the Area 18 CHA planning a Friday night futurity for every weekend show in 2002.

Cuttin' Capital Celebration
The first "Cuttin' Capital Celebration," held November 9
raised the roof on expectations in attendance and fundraising.
Contributions approached $300,000 and the generous response came from over 700 who attended the event held at the Radisson Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas. Proceeds will benefit Campbell Health Systems Hepatitis C Awareness Project and Inpatient Cancer Care Unit in Weatherford, Texas.
Jan and Ben Emison of Weatherford were honored during the festivities for their initiative in launching the project. Together with co-chairs, Nan and Bob Kingsley, of America's Country Countdown, they succeeded in creating a charitable event worth repeating.
"We are already preparing for next year," said Campbell Health Systems' Rhenda Weathersby. "There are many people who are disappointed they couldn't make it this time and plan to attend the next one."
The highlight this year was the auctioning of a Border Collie pup bred and donated by NCHA's Russell McCord, and his wife, Tasha. The highest bidders with $12,000 were Tina and Ron Hughes. The young Aledo, Texas, couple explained, "We know cancer firsthand in our family and feel this is a worthy cause."

UCHA/Community Press Futurity & Aged Event
The 2001 Utah Cutting Horse Association/Community Press
Futurity & Aged Event held in Ogden, Utah, wrapped up on November 10 with a
