Forty
Years of the Futurity (Full
Story)
It has
been 40 years since Buster Welch claimed victory at the first National Cutting
Horse Association Futurity event. Welch was one of ten finalists in the 1962
NCHA Futurity, which featured 36 nominated horses and took place over the
course of two days.
Through the years, the Futurity has grown to be the NCHA's largest event, and one of the most prestigious in the entire equine community. Forty years of history has been made by contestants at the NCHA World Championship Futurity, and at the 2001 Futurity, those accomplishments will be revisited.
The 40th annual NCHA Futurity will be held November 27 - December 16 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Along with the cutting, the show will feature eight horse sales, the Cowboy Christmas Extravaganza gift and trade show, a Cowboy Santa, and a celebrity cutting.

Race
Just
shy of $6,000 are the winnings Mary Jo Milner, current Non-Pro World leader,
needs to reach the $1 million dollar mark in lifetime NCHA earnings. Milner is
the reigning Non-Pro World Champion and has been riding at the top of the class
for most of the 2001 point-year. Red White And Boon, the steady gelding that
has carried her to the heights in competition, is a 1993 $3,000 Novice World
Champion and earner of $525,212.
A little over $2,000 is what keeps second-placed Rosies Lena ridden by Robert Rust and owned by Ken Sitton, from catching up with Open World leader Christys Acre ridden by Pat Earnheart, and owned by Robert & Andrea Finger. Steadily moving up in Open division competition is Harriott Playgirl, owned by Lee Garner and shown by Allen Crouch. The competitive pair are now positioned in 4th place having added 14 shows to their roster and $7,500 in earnings. At the close of September they were 20th, and in the October Chatter standings, in 10th place.
The Top 15 in both divisions will meet in February 2002, to compete for the championship titles at the John Deere/NCHA World Championship Finals in Houston, Texas.
