World Champions crowned
It came as no surprise that Mary Jo Milner won the NCHA Non-Pro World
Championship at the John Deere/NCHA World Championship Finals in Houston on
February 17. She was so far ahead of the pack at the end of the regular season
that her lead was unbeatable.
However, Milner's total earnings of $120,182.51 established a new record for a Non-Pro World Champion. Only Kobie Wood and Cash Quixote Rio have earned more money in a year on the World Championship circuit, and that was in Open competition in 1990. This year's title was the fourth for Milner, tying Carol Rose for the all-time record of Non-Pro World Championships. (News Release)
But 26-year-old Amy Welch King, making her World Finals debut, won the Non-Pro cutting in Houston by half a point over Milner, 900 to 899½. (News Release)
When serious contender Christys Acre had to skip the World Finals, that gave Rosies Lena, ridden by Robert Rust for Ken Sitton of Freeport, Texas, a clear run for the 2001 NCHA Open World Champion' s title. Sitton first got excited about cutting in 1996 while attending the World Finals. (News Release)
Trainer Allen Crouch rode Lee Garner's Harriott Playgirl to win the Open World Finals by 5½ points over five-time World Champion Kobie Wood on Joe Montana's That Cool Cat. (News Release)
Garner, who rode the youngest horse in Houston, six-year-old Oh Cay Liberty, in both the Non-Pro and Open World Finals, collected more cash than any other competitor. Harriott Playgirl earned $26,153 for Garner, while Oh Cay Liberty made a total of $22,563 in both divisions of the World Finals (not counting what she earned for winning the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Non-Pro cutting and making it to the HLS&R Open finals under Garner) for a grand total of $48,716. Garner, who started the week wishing he were a good enough rider to show off the mare's talents, wound up winning the fourth round of the Open on her with a 228.

AQHA/NCHA Affiliate Challenge to
debut at Eastern National Championships
The Chevy Trucks/NCHA Eastern National Championships will
be bigger and better than ever in 2002, thanks to the AQHA/NCHA
Affiliate Challenge. The challenge is a program that provides greater
structure and a "team" concept to the NCHA Eastern National
Championships. The cutting event will take place at the Jackson, Mississippi,
Fairgrounds from March 12-23.
Each of the National Cutting Horse Association's 120 different affiliate organizations can send their top 10 competitors from 11 different classes to compete in both the Eastern National Championships and its sister event, the Western National Championships, held later in the spring in Ogden, Utah. In 2001, there were over 925 entries in the Chevy Trucks/NCHA Eastern National Championships, an event that spanned 12 days.

Cutting Workshop in Kansas
The Kansas Cutting Horse Association will be hosting their first ever
Introduction to Cutting Workshop on March 2, 2002. Tom Frey of Stillwell,
Kansas, is spearheading the effort. The idea behind the workshop is to give
people who are already involved in other horse sports a full day of instruction
about the ins and outs of cutting, with plenty of one-on-one attention.
If you would like to attend, or know anyone who may be interested in participating, please call Mr. Frey at (913) 681-8489.
