Big Finish for Western Horseman Cup
Boon San Kitty, ridden by Eddie Flynn for Walton's Rocking W Ranch of Mineral Wells, Texas, marked 221 to win the Western Horseman Cup during the Augusta Futurity January 28. It was the second time that an NCHA Horse of the Year took the coveted title, following Chiquita Pistol's victory in the 2004 Western Horseman Cup.
Fifteen horses that had qualified at aged events across North America during the year took part in the one-round showdown.
In the Non-Pro division, Jim Langdale marked 221 on Widows Intentions for the win. Widows Intentions also placed second in the Open, ridden by Austin Shepard. "It's probably the most humbling thing that's ever happened to me," said Langdale, who is still eligible for Amateur competition.
New Western Horseman Cup Season Heats up
The recent Augusta Futurity and San Diego Cutting by the Sea saw horses putting Western Horseman Cup points on the board from coast to coast. At Augusta, Play Stocks, ridden by Michelle Hall for Slate River Ranch, won the Open, while Jim Vangilder won the Non-Pro on Freckles Royally Doc.
At San Diego, Rio Guarantee won the Open for Gene & Patty Herman with Jason Haefner on board. NCHA Futurity Non-Pro champ Sandy Bonelli and Midnight Rondeezvous took the Non-Pro honors.
Meanwhile, the Memphis Futurity is underway at Tunica, Mississippi, and continues through February 8, with the first finals scheduled for tomorrow.

Big Purse Increases in Place for National Championships
The Wayne Hodges Trailer Sales/Outlaw Conversions NCHA Eastern and Western National Championships will carry $12,000 in added money per class (excluding Youth classes) this spring. That is an increase from the $10,000 added per class in previous years.
The increased added money lays the foundation for the biggest shows ever. Along with new payout formulas in place at the 2005 shows, weekend cutters stand to collect some healthy checks at the shows in Jackson, Mississippi, and Ogden, Utah.
If entry numbers this spring hold steady with last year’s shows, prize money awarded at the Eastern National Championships will be $99,940 more than last year. The Western National Championships will pay out $84,895 more than last year, based on similar entry numbers.
The Wayne Hodges Trailer Sales/Outlaw Conversions NCHA Eastern National Championships are scheduled for March 7-19 in Jackson, while the Western show will be held April 28-May 8 in Ogden.
The deadline for entries for the Eastern show is February 10, and for the Western show, it's April 5.
