A Super Start
The NCHA Super Stakes and Super Stakes Classic got underway this morning in Fort Worth, Texas, and continues through April 17. There are a record number of entries vying for nearly $2.4 million in prize money. The NCHA Super Stakes is the second leg of the prestigious Triple Crown of Cutting events held annually in Fort Worth.
Super Stakes Sale
Western Bloodstock's 2005 NCHA Super Stakes Sale is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17 at Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Last year's sale saw the top 10 horses sell for an average of $53,500, while the top 20 averaged $37,400.
Big Finish at NCHA Eastern National Championships
The North Mississippi Cutting Horse Association racked up 1,425 points to win the AQHA/NCHA Affiliate Challenge at the Wayne Hodges Trailer Sales/Outlaw Conversions NCHA Eastern National Championships which concluded in Jackson, Mississippi March 19. The Affiliate Challenge pays out $54,000 to NCHA affiliates each year based on participation and achievement at the Eastern and Western National Championships.
Billy Ballard, who won the $20,000 Non-Pro title at Jackson, also finished in a three-way tie for the high score of the show. In a tie-breaking draw, he won the a year's use of a trailer, courtesy of Wayne Hodges.

Big Purse Increases in Place for National Championships
With an increase in added money, the Wayne Hodges Trailer Sales/Outlaw Conversions NCHA Eastern National Championships paid out a record purse of more than $335,000, not counting the AQHA/NCHA Affiliate Challenge money. Each class (with the exception of the Youth classes), carried $12,000 in added money, up from $10,000 in recent years. The total purse offered at Jackson was up more than 20% from last year.
The Wayne Hodges Trailer Sales/Outlaw Conversions NCHA Western National Championships to be held in Ogden Utah, April 28-May 8 will enjoy a similar boost in added money. The deadline for entries for the Western show, is April 5.
Members Respond to Survey
More than 2,200 NCHA members responded to the demographic survey the association recently conducted online, and more than 1,500 completed the entire survey.
"This was an overwhelming response, and we greatly appreciate the time so many members took to complete the process," said NCHA Executive Director Jeff Hooper. "The results will help us improve the level of services and benefits we are able to provide to all members."

You can save money if you plan ahead for the NCHA Triple Crown shows in Fort Worth, Texas. With a 222-point win at the Bonanza Cutting, Cat T Masterson, ridden by Tag Rice for Jack and Susan Waggoner of Bridgeport, Texas, moved into first place in the Western Horseman Cup Open Standings.
The PCCHA Spring Roundup concluded March 20 at Paso Robles, California. Hickorysomebodysmart, ridden by Brad Vaughn for Clarence Williams, marked 224.5 to win the Open Derby. The Non-Pro Derby went to Cathy Lamb on Amberlena Telesis, with a 223. Jalinda Covey won the Amateur Derby on Swinging To The Beat.
The 2005 NCHA Annual Convention will be held at the Suncoast Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, June 24-26. The NCHA Convention starts on Friday, June 24, with committee meetings that continue through Saturday, June 25. A cocktail reception will be held Saturday evening, followed by general membership and directors’ meetings on Sunday.

A breeding to Smart Chic Olena, a sire of performance horses with earnings of $6 million, is still available through the National Youth Cutting Horse Association’s largest fundraiser of the year, the NYCHA Stallion Service Program. More than 100 great stallions have been offered in the program, which supports scholarships, youth awards and activities. All remaining breedings are available on a first come, first serve basis for 60% of the listed breeding fee. Mare owners should contact the breeding facility to determine any additional costs such as chute fee and mare care. A complete list of available breedings is available at the NCHA website as well as the Cutting Horse Chatter. How to select a trainer, purchasing a cutting horse, and what level of involvement best suits you are some of the issues addressed in this video.
The US Department of Agriculture has launched a website devoted to the National Animal Identification System. The NAIS is designed to identify and track animals, including horses, to provide rapid
trace backs in the event of a disease outbreak.
The American Horse Council's 2005 Horse Industry Directory is now available for purchase for $20. The publication includes listings, both national and international, covering every segment of the equine industry.
